Barentsburg is on Svalbard, and Svalbard is NOT a part of Norway. Norway has some limited jurisdiction over fisheries and some environmental regulations. And Barentsburg and the Pyramide has been there for ages. Russians mine coal, same as we do.

And it is not in Norway. Svalbard is not norwegian but administrated by Norway. There is a large difference. Further, it is not a free for all. To develop resources there you need to own or have contractual rights to the land your business use. That is why the chineese now looks to purchase lands there with a coastline. No surprise when the harbour is built, and armed in a direct break of the treaty as Svalbard according to the treaty is a demilitarized zone. And lastly - the norse sagas do describe the land with the cool coasts - that is what the name Svalbard ment in norse. The dutch coming several hundred years later called it Spitzbergen.

Since when do they have russian money there? When I was there it was simply money free. All miners ate together, had the right to get a certain amount of supplies from a warehouse, and got their salary put in bank account. Of course this was in 1996. By then all children had left the place and the KGB was gone from the consulate, but you still needed special contacts to get a place to stay Barentsburg. I was there for three and a half weeks. A missionary trip :) We lived in a small hotel for visiting scientist. There was a very, very small store there, but the inhabitants didn´t shop there. it was EXPENSIVE! One roll of toilet paper costed NOK. That would be about $3.9 in todays money assuming the exchange rate was the same then as it is now.

Svalbard is not Norway. Svalbard is Svalbard. It is governed by the Svalbard treaty . Norway is the janitor of Svalbard - not the "owner". A lot of the video is not exactly lie, but misleading. Nationalities who signed the Svalbard Treaty can go to Svalbard without visa, but that does not entitle them to go to Norway. You can not go to Svalbard "without a purpose". The purpose can be tourism, though. Russia does not need Svalbard more than a fish needs a floating device. "The North passage" does not need Svalbard, and Russia has enough gas in the mainland for 200 years with the current consumption level. Russia does not need more coal than they can trade for gas without Svalbard. It is countries without proximity to Artic - like China - who needs access to Svalbard. The Norwegians seems to believe that Svalbard is as Norwegian as brown-cheese, but soon they will be awakened.

You show photos from Pyramiden and talk about Barentsburg… Pyramiden is an original swedish town later bought/overtaken by the Soviet Union to use for mining. I’ve been there. Was a nice place. But this time you mixed it up. Today Pyramiden is a ghostntown, only visited by tourists and a few seasonal russian staff. Barentsburg is still inhabitant by russians.

This is Arktikugol! Barentsburg is still functioning as a coal mining colony. The Norwegian Government also still mines coal around Longyearbayen. Most of the photos are of Pyramiden which was the other Arkitugol mining colony. The USSR purchased the mine and mining colony from a Swedish company Unlike Barentsburg the mine here is now closed. However the town is still Arktikugol property and is now mainly used as a Museum and heritage centre. Under the terms of the Svalbard Treaty some 52 countries have the right to exploit coal and other minerals in the archipelago.

There were 2 russian towns, Barentsburg, and Pyramiden (which is shown in your video) having 2300 inhabitants and each had a heliport. The hardest battle between Norwegian and Russian authrities were the use of Norwegian postal stamps, as the russians used russian stamps, and transported to Russia themselves. But the Norwgian laws said the Norway Mail had a monopoly in Norway. So they opened a Norwegian post "office" in the russian post office, with a Norwegian date-stamp. It was served by russians.
