actually stop, now im getting lottery ads. 🤣🤣
*slowly writes down notes*
Isn't the winnings taxed though?
ALthe recommended this nonsense to me ?
Thats a lot of double countings in the calculation, but I think it wont make too much of a difference in this case.
Just bought a pair of Raycons!
Thank you for another great vide mr Hot Dog Tuxedo Boy.
That is not even math 😂😂😂
but i you have 5 matched numbers the prize from 4, 3, 2 you will not get
is that how mr beast got rich?
And after tax the prize is $50
Near the beginning you mention a lottery system where the jackpot increases until someone wins it. Someone else used this to their advantage, basically buying out the entire lottery until they got the jackpot
It's never lupus
50/50 chance No, its not Its more like 51/49 for tails/heads
“American states have a god given right to repeat the mistakes of other American states” I literally had to pause the video so I can laugh for who knows how long
MiT students were doing it too. They ended up rotating out who played what jackpot
Read thia story back in the day. Started in different state. That specific game ended in his state so he went states away to massachusetts.
Surely if you've already taken into account the tickets where 5 numbers match you wouldn't put them in the category for if 4 numbers match? Just like probbilities with or without replacement. You did with? Which isn't realistic? Or did i follow on wrong?
I just wonder, how the heck is it 1 in 39,028? Even if numbers can't repeat and you can permutate them, it's still 46!/41! which is, according to my calc, 164,490,480.07034. If the numbers can't repeat, but should stay at the exact places, then it's 1 in 46*45*44*43*42, which is 1 in 164,490,480 (not 1 in 39,028). You've probably done a bad job explaining the lottery, but I still can't even come up whith how it can be 39,028. Correct me please of I'm stupid
Has anyone seen my sandwich?
21% return with 80% taxes. How is this a win?
*"WRONG WRONG WRONG"!* If you DONT hit,, they taKe your bet!!! In time you have *NOTHING* MORE TO BET!! And if you WiN,, they *TaX* that mfKr!! Every gambling establishment is set up that way. Stupid as heLL to believe otherwise!!! 🤬😵🙄🤔😫😱
I was tricked; the math was not only pretty easy to understand, but also not particularly much of it. I guess that means it's time for a 3Blue1Brown video.
I was going to study but this seems important
1 minute trying-to-be-funny intro..... yawn.... Also millions if non-americans watch vids like this who cant relate to your "prom stories" and what not US thighs.... stick to the point man!
Dream: are you really lucky?
Did you use the numbers without replacement or could the 5/6 odds tickets also win the 4/6 and 3/6 odds winnings?
damn... this guy was spying on my 11th grade prom
I heard raycons actually suck
So how much did that couple make
Umm I think you forgot to figure in the amount of taxes you'd have to pay on all those winnings?
Math is useful in every single conversation and process, and forms the foundation of logical thought. It’s just that people don’t realize that they’re using it. Look at the nonsense that’s going on right now where most people can’t even figure out what safety precautions to take from CV19, and they’re waiting around to be told, and making poor decisions, and needing the Gov’t to tell them if masks work or not, etc. That’s poor ability to engage in logical thought - math trains logical thought - metaphorically, it’s like weightlifting for the brain.
Wouldn’t you have to subtract the expected value of getting 5/6 from the total before calculating for the 4/6 and so on?
the issue with this is if you buy 200,000 tickets and someone wins the jackpot that week there for the $2,000,000 isn't distributed and you lose over $300,000 LOL, they got lucky
The maths is wrong. For example, If you’re expected to get 250 out of the 200000 tickets then for the next calculation you will have 199750 tickets and not 200000.
Then taxes take 30%
Nice math, hot dog tuxedo boy
That's not the proper math. You're essentially double counting some tickets since any ticket that has 5/6 also has 4/6 and so on. You need the probability for exactly 4/6 and exactly 3/6 etc. Otherwise you'll be inflating the expected value.
Hey hotdog tuxedo boy
I'm a little confused about the expected value calculation. - A 5/6 win on a ticket would make that ticket ineligible to ALSO WIN on 4/6, 3/6 and 2/6 - Same with 4/6 tickets ineligible to also win 3/6, 2/6 and 3/6 tickets ineligible to also win 2/6 Why then would the expected value be calculated with the entirety of your 200,000 tickets each time? If we calculate these independently and then sum them to get a total expected value, haven't we double-counted the expected value of some tickets along the way? I'm unsure how big a difference that makes.
Great video
The only people able to exploit this loophole are already rich enough to buy milions of tickets to begin with. There's probably a better thing to invest millions of your dollars in I think.
$58,000 worth of lottery tickets equals zero.
Get on with the video and quit the lame "comedy".
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t the expected value be lower because for every ticket you bought you can only win one prize meaning you’d have to subtract the number of winning tickets from the original 200,000 tickets bringing your overall expected value down because there are less tickets to win smaller prizes with?
Did they keep the money? Is this illegal? Seems like they should have got away with it when it's the states fault for not realising it.
Hold on there, Jasper. You're forgetting the fact that if multiple people win with the same numbers, they share the prizes, which reduces your take.

Also....taxes

Well, sort of. The top prize is always split among winners, and sometimes the runner up works that way. But a lot of them don't. And the lower prizes, like the three and four ball winners get paid from a different pool that doesn't require splitting of such small prizes.

HOLD IT! They’re likely married, so that means that they would likely use both of their gains together, which not only gets rid of the problem you proposed, but also means that one of them can tell the other if something is a bad idea!
Oh so that's why they say one entry per household
"fatigue, tiredness" [Looks at clock saying 11:45 PM] Eh.
I mean then there is tax...
Way too much waffle and cheap gags. Just get to the point.
I did not understand the math.
You Wanna talk about that tuxedo hot dog thing?
5:18 the graphic doesn't match the audio
but you forgot to factor in what happens if someone else wins the jackpot - you don't get as much payout for all the other lower tiers and you would have still spent the 400k. All lotteries are still stacked in the house's favor
Me being grade 4 and not understanding anything
They didn’t break it the simply won the lottery. Your math skills are as poor as your metaphors. Make it short
It's never lupus.
"If not, then this video will make as much sense as the relationship between Elon Musk and Grimes" 😂😂😂😂 the jokes are on point!
So they win the lottery because they have the raycon earbuds ?
People in the comments complaining that we should have learned how to do taxes in school, but what we really should be calling for is for the government to just do our taxes for us, like it has the capability to do
The return rate is lower because you need to remove the tickets that were winners
1:45 *Sex. It's not hard to understand.*
And just like the fire nation invading, everything changed
"Lots of math" *basic arithmetic* "The ACTUAL numbers" "To make the math pretty,..."
I didn't get the math, for the 5/6 chance of winning you have 200.000 tickets but for the 4/6 you have to subtract the tickets that already got 5/6 so the number should be lower, am I correct?
Sort of like making money on throwing a stupid video on ALthe . (enough viewers will make the same mistake a nd by habit (chance) watch the stupid video and 'on a long shot' buy some crap shoot (crappy shit)
'It's never lupus'
What about taxes..
For video essays at least he doesnt talk 0.5 mph and is mildly funny
.......Hot dog tuxedo boy.... for reals???
I actually sneezed right now 😧
Great technique to get folks to watch the entire vid. You prep’d us for an insane amount of math then showed a regular amount. Nice!
I have the feeling, that you think 'expected value' has something to do with monetary value because everytime you use the term, you show some amount of expected money won. But the word value in stochastics just refers to a number, like in "what is the value of x".
My luck is so awesome that if there are 10 tickets and 1 one them is winning and if I bought 9 of them then the 1 which is left will be the winning lottery
Trying way too hard to be funny. This video really was half as interesting as I expected and much less than it could have been. Maybe that's the bit?
Still waiting for this insane amount of math, that was promised to me
The expected value of one ticket will be higher then the cost for this game. Buying large quantities only increases your bottom line, buying as much as 1000 tickets should ensure a profit. However, It is doubtful that this was not done on purpose. Having worked at a convenience store I know first hand what a terrible addiction this can be for some people. people who actually win just pour it all back in. People who cannot afford a car or the insurance but dropping 100 dollars on worthless slips of paper. One lady nice as can be swore she knew the secret to which ones would pay off but at 60 she was still still dumping obscene amounts of cash on trash before crossing the street to go to work an entry-level job at a supermarket. Letting people make money only gives them justification continue and get addicted. I wonder what the future value of all the suckers that got hooked when there was an roi.
I used math like this on Csgo websites
I am subscribing in the hopes of hearing more about fire nation
This assumes that every ticket that hits 5 numbers also wins the prizes for hitting 4, 3, and 2 and so on down, wouldnt you have to remove the higher winning tickets from the lower winning tickets odds. "5 tickets of 200k should hit five out six numbers...800 out of 199,995 tickets should hit 4 out 6 numbers....
I was not expecting that Elon and grimes joke but it SENT ME
The majority of Lotto winners do NOT make terrible financial decisions and go bankrupt.
You k bro
Getting Rey C0ns is a terrible mistake.
Agh, I got lupus from watching this!
Flipping a coin is actually 51\49
Love the content, your logo just looks too history Channel-ish :)
The issue here is: did those guys play the same numbers every time? Or did they try and guess the numbers every time?
You skipped the part of the story where complicated algorithms were developed to ensure an even spread of ticket numbers, such that one wasn't relying on the odds. I.e., you can drive the actual winnings to be very close to the expected winnings. When the variance drops far enough, every time you play, you win.
I had a stroke while listening to the math part
A couple years ago the Pennsylvania Lottery introduced keno with various buy one get one free promotions. I was in charge of running the machine most of the time and I did the math for every promotion. I stopped keeping track of my winnings vs losses after I was ahead a couple thousand dollars. I couldn't believe how long they let that go on
What I don't get is, how the lottery did make money in the first place. Because the more lottery tickets will be sold, the more they lose money.

@Jenny yeah, I guess.

yeah I'm a bit confused - is this just saying that the lottery actually made a net loss?
I wanna know how long it took to fill out and purchase/print/check all those tickets 🤣
This video could have been 3 minutes shorter.
I feel personally attacked. All 3 states listed are the 3 states I moved too. lol though, admittedly, I don't get the reference.
Lotteries have to be winnable, otherwise people stop playing.
It’s always Lupus
Who has 400 000 to start trying to break the lotto ?
