(paraphrasing) - "back in the olden days, information had to travel along a big web of telephone wires". You do realize that information still travels along a big web of cables, right? Your Insta doesn't magically appear on a phone in London or Rio de Jeneiro. The world is analog.

Somewhere in 1995 i got a calculator which had a speaker attached to it and if you held that speaker to the microphone from a telephone then you could select a phone number and the speaker would made bleeping sounds and the call is being made. This was quite a gadget to have back in those days :P

This really took off in the 80's with the advent of computers with sound chips like the SID chip in the Commodore 64. The SID chip was a very, very basic synthesizer. Reproducing the necessary tones was pretty easy. The blue box software would reproduce the sound and you could hold your phone receiver to your monitor/TV speaker. The basic technique in the mid 80's was to dial an 800 number, blow tones, then override the default number the 800 was set to dial. So many teenagers and young adults were doing this in order to pirate games via dial up modems that the FBI got involved and there were ARMED search warrants executed all over the USA and a lot of kids and their parents were in hot water. My father was in the military and my behind was subject to a long and painful beating with a leather belt. So the temptation to participate was culled out of me long before.

I really hate how landlines don't exist anymore. Like, if the electricity goes does, so do the modern house phones that rely on internet connection. A landline meant you could call even if the electricity was down.

Many years ago, when I was college age, I was alone at home one evening when the phone rang. It was my stepbrother, who had been sent to live with his father after my Dad and stepmom had tired of his antics and thievery. This time, he was in Raiford Prison, near Jacksonville, FL. I was in Vancouver. He didn't want to talk about how he'd made it into the joint, but when I asked how the hell he managed to call cross-continent, he said that an inmate had rigged up a device that dialed by tones. He'd earned some time using it and decided to call home. Just as well his mother wasn't home, and I wasn't going to tell her.

I thought it was fake because the book is fantastic. What I want to say. I read a book and I see an algorithm throwing things away about what I read. I'm confused

Well, sort of truth. In the '60's and '70's, you could blow a 2600 Hz tone to get a connection. We also had blue boxes and black boxes. Still have my boxes packed away. Theses all worked on the old cross-bar switching networks. God Bless Captain Crunch. I was a member of 2600, LODH, but dropped out just before the FBI raids. My mentor was (secret) who became a local security consultant. I learned social engineering, even directly contacting local corporation computer centers and asking if I could try to hack them after hours. Yes, they were bored and agreed.

When people call me a phreak, I wonder how they knew? That was so long ago. TI-99 was the easiest and cheap 80s computer to produce accurate tones on. You pretty much told it the actual frequency you wanted it to play and for how long and it played a pretty accurate representation of that frequency. The Apple II plus was a bit more complicated and you had your to do your own timing in the programming or something like that, or so I heard from a friend in New Mexico.

  • Genifer Teal

I've always liked how quirky and particular you seem. (I have no actual idea if you are.) Now that I know how sweet you like your coffee, I'm not sure I can listen anymore. Sometimes just the thought of a food you don't like is enough to leave a taste in your mouth. I'm no longer enjoying this morning's coffee.
