I live in Clearwater FL within walking distance of their religious center of the universe. I see Scientologists every day and have seen some of their more famous members several times. They infiltrate every government agency they can from the local level on up. What they can't infiltrate they sue. We used to have a wonderful newspaper that were constantly doing investigative reports on Scientology until they sued them out of existence. When the new Clearwater Public Library opened up it was discovered that all archived copies of the Clearwater Sun mysteriously disappeared. Clearwater has no photography zones. In violation of the constitution, Clearwater Police enforce an unofficial off the books law that you cannot photograph or video any Scientology property for any reason. If you are caught they will confiscate your camera, you will not get it back and you will not be compensated. Then they will put you in handcuffs and keep you in the Clearwater Police station for 48 hours without being charged and either let you go or if they are feeling particularly ambitious, they will charge you with any number of bogus crimes like disorderly conduct, malicious mischief and so on. The reason this can happen is due to the fact that first Scientology built the city a new police station a few years ago and second, half the force are members as are half the staff at city hall. Scientology owns most of the real estate in the downtown area. They don't pay taxes on any of those properties. They ruined an otherwise nice downtown by scaring away all the tourists who used to come here 50 years ago. They have purchased multiple hotels and multiple apartment complexes and evicted everyone without reason and then put their members up in those locations. One building had 120 condo unites and the Scientologists went in and bought up one unit at a time until all the vacant ones were theirs. Then they got involved in the condo management and as soon as they got majority ownership which took about 5 years they created a whole slew of impossible to follow rules and evicted the rest of the owners for breaking those rules imposing ludicrous fines like $25,000 for having furniture visible through your windows on the 20th floor or having the wrong shade of white light coming from under your door or having the wrong color furniture on your balcony. They even imposed a $100,000 per day late fee for being late on your $1500 a month condo fee which used to be $300 a month. So now they own the entire building which they now charge $5000 a month in condo fees for.
