So why did Yuca Mountain fail? Because we thought we could store nuclear waste in glass and found out from Chernobyl that that will only hold it for about 30 years. There is no known way to store nuclear waste and our current waste has moved from 95% of the way to a critical event to 98% of a critical event. The closer to critical it gets, the less stable it becomes and the faster it could reach critical. So, we have somewhere less than 20 years before these rods will start to go critical on their own with no way for us to stop it.
